Jiji Press OKUMA, Fukushima (Jiji Press) — Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. started work to remove nuclear fuel from a storage pool in the No. 3 reactor building at its disaster-crippled Fukushima No. 1 power plant Monday.
In the current work, TEPCO plans to remove seven unspent fuel assemblies, which are among the 566 units of spent and unspent fuel on the top floor of the No. 3 reactor building. TEPCO hopes to finish removing the 566 units by the end of March 2021.
The nuclear plant’s No. 1 to No. 3 reactors underwent meltdowns following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit northeastern and eastern Japan. The No. 3 reactor is the first of the three meltdown-hit reactors from which nuclear fuel will be removed.Speech
