Record 35.4% of govt new recruits are women

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The government said Friday that women accounted for 35.4 percent of its new recruits in fiscal 2019, the highest level since it started to collect data in fiscal 2005.

The figure was up 1.4 percentage points from the previous year.

The government achieved its goal of keeping the proportion of women in new employees at or above 30 percent for the fifth straight year.

The result came as ministries and agencies continued to actively take measures to promote female employment, such as offering seminars for job-hunting women, officials of the Cabinet Bureau of Personnel Affairs said.

A total of 8,123 people were hired as central government employees as of April 1, the first day of fiscal 2019, with women accounting for 2,876.

Of the total, 708, including 245 women, are career-track workers, in charge of policy planning. The proportion of women came to a record high of 34.6 percent.Speech
