Mitsui O.S.K. unit receives safety order over drinking

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The transport ministry on Friday ordered Mitsui O.S.K. Passenger Line Ltd. to secure safety, after a captain’s drinking and inappropriate operation of a large cruise ship involved in an accident in Guam last December.

The ministry took the action under the marine transportation law.

On the night of Dec. 30, the 22,472-ton Nippon Maru, headed for Saipan, hit a U.S. naval pier in a port in Guam and sustained a hole near the stern and cracks, according to the company and others.

None of the 372 passengers or the 252 crew members aboard was injured.

The ministry said that the captain caused the accident, adding he operated the ship without checking the meters or gauges and backed it by mistake.Speech
