Japan calls on S. Korea to address ‘illegality’ of labor ruling

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga urged South Korea on Thursday to address the “illegality” of a recent ruling by the country’s top court against a major Japanese company over wartime requisitioned workers.

“There has emerged a situation of South Korea violating international law,” Suga told a press conference.

Suga claimed, “The ruling clearly violates the Japan-South Korea compensation claims agreement,” concluded when the two countries normalized their diplomatic relations in 1965, following the end of World War II.
