MSDF, U.S. Navy strike team begin drill in S. China Sea

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — A U.S. strike group led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson has begun a joint exercise with the Maritime Self-Defense Force in the South China Sea, where China has been creating islands and building military facilities.

The strike group, also including two Aegis guided-missile destroyers, has been conducting the drill since Sunday with the MSDF’s flattop helicopter carrier Ise to “enhance maritime interoperability between longstanding allies,” the U.S. Navy said.

It also said joint operations with the MSDF include antisubmarine and air defense training, adding the Ise will also conduct a replenishment-at-seat with the Carl Vinson.Speech
